Effects of Some Prebiotitics on Immunity and Disease Resistance in Cultured Fish

However, Infectious diseases in fish emerge a major problem for the aquaculture field as they cause very important economic loses. One of the most common ways to prevent aquatic diseases has been to use antibiotics in aquaculture as in other areas of animal farming. However, recently, there have been strict regulations on the use of antibiotics in aquaculture because of its seriously negative effects including development and spread of antibiotic resistance. So, antibiotics are no longer effective in treating bacterial diseases in some cases. This has prompted interest in developing alternative strategies to disease control such as prebiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that increase beneficial gut bacteria in the host. Despite the potential benefits to health and performance as noted in various terrestrial animals, the use of prebiotics in the farming of fish has been less investigated. Gastrointestinal bacteria play important roles in affecting the nutrition and health of the host organism. Prebiotics act at different levels in the innate immune response. Therefore, various means of altering the intestinal bacteria to achieve favorable effects such as better resistance to pathogens, enhancing growth and immune stimulation of the host organism have been investigated in various fish. The purpose of the present review provides an overview of effects of some prebiotics such as mannanoligosaccharides (MOS), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin, xylooligosaccharides (XOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS) on the immun system and resistance of diseases in cultured fish.
