Otolith Chemistry of Barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena, Linnaeus, 1758) in Iskenderun Bay

An otolith grows with elements and components in the environment which layers up on each other on the growth layer. The growth starts as a spawn and continues throughout maturation and until death and thus all life properties of a fish are recorded. Besides, otoliths of the fish might give some ideas about the environment where the fish lived. Thus, it becomes a potential tool for obtaining chronological records of the environment where the fish lived. This research was investigated from April to May 2013 in Iskenderun Bay. Macro and micro elements (Na, K, Li and Ca) were evaluated for Barracuda with four different age stages. As a result of this study, content of Na of the four different age stages of otoliths did not changed as much as all other elements investigated in this present study. Additionally, Ca levels of the otoliths were increased with the age whereas K and Li contents were decreased. Keywords : Otolith chemistry, Barracuda, Age Parameters
